Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA Abstract
As advanced computational methods are being developed and used to solve complex problems, the intersection of computational science and materials research presents a unique opportunity for ensuring the scientific and technological competitiveness of our nation. We explore the notion of designing a "Concept Material" through the process of multiscale modeling and simulation with verification and validation. Several types of applications, from grand challenge problems suitable for a national initiative to small-group projects linking colleagues across the campus, will be offered as examples, concluding with an outlook on global synergy in educating a new community of scientists and engineers.
