This course teaches you the advanced problem-solving skills you'll need in order to measure a process, analyze the results, develop process improvements and quantify the resulting savings. Talk Title: Analyzing Large Wired and Wireless Networks
Abstract: Emergence of the Internet and mobile wireless networks has given rise to large networks involving hundreds or thousands of users and relay nodes. While such networks have been around for a few decades, our limited resources in addition to the ever-increasing demands have pushed these networks to their limits. For instance, in cellular networks dropped calls are becoming a norm in populated areas these days. This demands for a fresh look at the problem of communication over large networks. While computing the high-dimensional capacity region of such networks is still of interest, in many cases it is more crucial to answer other fundamental questions such as the structure of capacity-achieving codes, or the amount of loss incurred by applying the existing codes. Answering these types of questions helps us strategize in terms of improving the performance of a given network, by either designing more efficient communication algorithms or redesigning the network's structure. In this talk, I will discuss some new approaches for analyzing large wired and wireless networks. In particular, I will describe new methods that allow us to answer questions about general noisy networks without computing their capacity regions. I will also explain a new hierarchical network analysis approach. For a given network, this new method enables us to find simpler networks of smaller sizes whose capacity regions provide upper or lower bounds on the capacity region of the original network. This is based on a joint work with Michelle Effros and Tracey Ho.
Biography: Shirin Jalali received her Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees from Stanford University in 2009, in Electrical Engineering and Statistics, respectively. Since then, she has been a postdoctoral scholar at the Center for Mathematics of Information at California Institute of Technology. She has received her B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2002 and her M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the same institution in 2004. Her main researchinterests are information theory and statistical signal processing. She is particularly interested in problems in network information theory and universal compression, acquisition and denoising.

Talk Title: Adaptive Feedback-Based Detection and Compensation of Dynamic System Failures and Damage
Abstract: Actuator and sensor failures, and system structural damage can cause control system performance deterioration and even lead to instability and catastrophic accidents. Effective date action and compensation of failures and damage are crucial for performance-critical systems. In this talk, we present some of our recently developed adaptive failure and damage detection and compensation techniques whose main features are feedback-based detection with guaranteed stability and direct compensation with fast and improved performance. Actuator failures are characterized by some unknown system inputs stuck at some unknown fixed or varying values at
unknown time instants and cannot be influenced by the applied control signals. Sensor failure and uncertainties cause errors in measuring the system output signals for feedback control. System damage can cause large structural and parametric uncertainties. The task of direct adaptive compensation is to design the feedback control signals in a way that despite uncertain failures and damage, the adaptive control system can automatically achieve desired stability and asymptotic tracking.
A key feature of many fault detection schemes is that they require the system to be detected remains stable when a fault (failure or damage) occurs. This may limit the applicability of such schemes in performance-critical systems applications such as aircraft flight control systems which may become unstable when a fault occurs. A desirable detection scheme should be designed in a feedback framework to ensure the needed stability for effective fault detection. We will address some technical issues in direct adaptive failure and damage compensation and in feedback-based fault detection: system modeling with failures and damage, redundant actuation and sensing, plant-model matching, system invariance under damage, error systems with faults, adaptive detection and compensation design, stability and tracking analysis, and system performance evaluation.
Biography: Gang Tao received his B.S. (EE) degree from University of Science and Technology of China in 1982, M.S. (EE, CpE, ApMath) degrees and Ph.D. (EE) degree from University of Southern California during 1984-1989. For over 25 years, he worked in the areas of adaptive control, with particular interests in adaptive control of systems with multiple inputs and multiple outputs and with nonsmooth nonlinearities and actuator failures, in stability and robustness of adaptive control systems, and in passivity characterizations of dynamic systems. Recently he has been working on adaptive control of systems with uncertain actuator failures and nonlinearities, structure damage and sensor uncertainties, with applications to aircraft flight control.
He is currently an associate editor for Automatica and a subject editor for International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

CMOS Process Variations: A “Critical Operation Point” Hypothesis

Talk Title: CMOS Process Variations: A âCritical Operation Pointâ Hypothesis
Abstract: A brief overview of present and future CMOS process variations will be presented. Prevailing understanding of a chipâs behavior under large process variations with statistical delay assumptions leads one to conclude that a small number of errors are likely as we progress further down on Mooreâs Law. This understanding is challenged by a new hypothesis on the behavior of very large CMOS chips in the presence of process variations. A Thought Experiment is presented which leads to the new hypothesis. The new hypothesis states that in every large CMOS chip, there exist critical operations points (frequency, voltage, temperature) such that it divides the 3-D space (F, V, T) in to two distinct spaces: 1. Error-free operation and 2. Massive errors (i.e. completely inoperable). Two attempts at disproving this hypothesis with real physical experiments will be described. Some consequences of the hypothesis on power savings in large data centers are also suggested.
Biography: Janak H. Patel is a Research Professor in Coordinated Science Laboratory and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Patelâs research contributions include Pipeline Scheduling, Cache Coherence, Cache Simulation, Interconnection Networks, On-line Error Detection, Reliability analysis of memories with ECC and scrubbing, Design for Testability, Built-In Self-Test, Fault Simulation and Automatic Test Generation. Patel has supervised over 85 M.S. and Ph.D. theses and published over 200 technical papers and listed as a Highly Cited Researcher. He was a founding technical advisor to Nexgen Microsystems that gave rise to the entire line of microprocessors from AMD. He was a founder of successful startup, Sunrise Test, a CAD company for chip testing, now owned by Synopsys.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Gujarat University, India and Bachelor of Technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He is a fellow of ACM and IEEE and a recipient of the 1998 IEEE Piore Award.

Talk Title: Stochastic and Multiscale Models for Urban and Natural Ecology
Abstract:
This research reflects on both particular cases of ecologies: sensor networks in urban water distribution systems and forest dynamics under changing disturbance regime, and the elaboration of exploration tools to investigate and assess those complex ecologies. The predictive models that emerged from this work rely on sophisticated computer simulations designed based on stochastic and multiscale principles, and contribute to characterizing and evaluating the knowledge and information that is available about the systems under investigation. This thesis is organized into three distinct projects, each of which confronts specific challenges encountered when modeling complex systems. The first project considers the monitoring of water distribution networks where we describe a stochastic parameterization and analysis of uncertainty for the design of single-stage as well as two-stage sensor networks aimed at maximizing the probability of detection of accidents and intrusions in water distribution systems. Next, this study explores the ecological and evolutionary impacts of different disturbance regimes (generated following a stochastic Poisson process) on forests using the framework of a spatially explicit and individual-based forest model designed around four functional traits of trees. The final project investigates a multiscale characterization of forest dynamics using Monte-Carlo simulations of the fine scale dynamics to synthesize a coarse-grain stochastic model describing the dynamics of the system on larger spatial scales. In addition to modeling aspects, all three projects yield adequate computational performance, thereby assessing a recurrent challenge associated with the computational feasibility and performance of relevant numerical algorithms.

Talk Title: SAP TERP 10 Student Certification Academy
Abstract: The University of Southern California, being an active member of SAPâs Global University Alliances program since its inception in 1996, has been chosen to offer the TERP10 Academy to its students in early Summer 2012. The TERP10 Academy, and its certification, is a direct response to the global forecast of needed SAP skills in the market, estimated at between 30,000 and 40,000, in the next several years.
Students completing the TERP10 Academy and passing SAPâs certification exam will have the advantage of being equipped with a good understanding of business processes adopted by companies around the world. They will also get insights into best business practices and how SAP can be used to optimize business processes. Students will find that the TERP10 Certification will open internship opportunities as well as full time jobs with consulting firms such as Deloitte, Ernst and Young, KPMG, Hitachi, and other SAP partner companies.
There will be two offerings of the SAP TERP10 Student Certification Academy in 2012. Both offerings will run for 9 full days, with the the certification examination to be given on the morning of the 10th day.
Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Prof. Vawter began teaching officially at ITP in 1996 and currently focuses on SAP.

Talk Title: Inferring Speaker Affect in Spoken Natural Language Communication
Abstract: Speech interfaces are now abundant in our everyday lives. Yet, the experience of talking to a dialogue system or posing queries to a smartphone is not as natural or as efficient as conversing with another human. In this talk, I will present my work, at the intersection of spoken language processing and adaptive intelligent systems, that is aimed at making spoken language communication more natural and efficient. Intelligent speech-enabled systems must move beyond recognizing the words that a person is saying; they must also listen to the personâs manner of speaking and detect any emotions or affective signals that are conveyed. As a concrete example, I will address the problem of inferring a speakerâs level of certainty using prosodic information (intonation, rhythm, and energy) from the speech signal. I will present a technique for computing prosodic features from utterance segments that both improves level of certainty classification and can be used to determine the cause of uncertainty. These models are able to accurately classify speaker certainty 75% of the time. I will also discuss a novel method for eliciting affective speech. This method binds the speakerâs uncertainty to a single phrase within the larger utterance, allowing for the comparison of contextually-based feature sets. This work has applications in a wide range of speech-enabled systems, including tutorial dialogue systems, language-learning tools, and voice search applications.
Biography: Heather Pon-Barry is a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at Harvard University. She received her B.S. and M.S. in Symbolic Systems at Stanford University. Her research interests include spoken language processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cognitive science. She is the recipient of NSF and NDSEG graduate research fellowships.

Talk Title: A health risk-driven approach for hydrogeological site characterization
Abstract: Obtaining accurate predictions of human health risks from groundwater contamination is a challenge. The main difficulty relies on the fact that many of the components that constitute human health risk assessment are uncertain and requires interdisciplinary knowledge. Amongst these, we highlight two classes of parameters: (1) hydrogeological and (2) health-related. Usually, sampling strategies are developed with the goal of reducing uncertainty, but less often they are developed in the context of their impacts on uncertainty. Understanding the impact from each of these components in human health risk can provide guidance for decision makers to best allocate resources towards minimal prediction uncertainty. One of the key points in risk management consists of knowing where to invest characterization efforts in a cost-effective manner. In this talk, a multi-component health risk-based framework is presented which allows decision makers to set priorities through a visualization tool. Results highlight the role of characteristic length-scales characterizing flow and transport in determining data needs within an integrated hydrogeological-health framework. We illustrate conditions where uncertainty reduction in human health risk may benefit from better understanding of the health component as opposed to a more detailed hydrogeological characterization. Through a series of examples, we show how fundamental knowledge on the main physical mechanisms affecting pollutant and solute pathways are necessary to understand the response of complex systems to varying drivers.

Talk Title: Data-Driven Ultrasonics for Pipe Monitoring
Abstract: Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the continuous assessment of structural integrity through permanently installed sensors. SHM complements traditional nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that are time and labor intensive and hence infrequent. SHM allows condition-based structural maintenance to replace the current practice of economically inefficient schedule-based maintenance. However, a major challenge for SHM lies in distinguishing the damage induced changes in the sensed signal from the changes produced by benign environmental and operational variations (such as temperature, air pressure in pipes, fluid flow, etc.).
In this talk, I will present a data-driven methodology for infrastructure monitoring that is robust to ambient environmental variability. I will focus on demonstrating the effectiveness of an integrated machine learning and signal processing approach for damage detection in pipe structures with surface-mounted piezoelectric wafers that generate and sense ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic waves can propagate long distances with high sensitivity to damage. However, it is difficult to recognize a defect due to the presence of multiple dispersive wave modes and the influence of environmental and operational factors. Laboratory experiments and field tests were conducted on a pipe specimen with randomly-controlled internal air pressure levels, and on an operating hot-water pipe with large and uncontrollable environmental fluctuations, respectively. The sensed ultrasonic data are characterized and mapped onto a high dimensional feature space using various signal processing techniques. Machine learning algorithms are then applied to automatically identify effective features and to detect a weak scatterer on the pipes under complex and highly dynamic operating conditions.
This data-driven monitoring methodology involves an integrated process of sensing, data acquisition, signal analysis, and pattern recognition, for continuous tracking of the structural functionality in an adaptive and cost-effective manner. The techniques developed in this work are expected to have broader applications related to the regular inspection, maintenance, and management of critical infrastructures not limited to pipes.

Talk Title: Resilient Control for Critical Infrastructure Networks
Abstract: Resilience is becoming a key consideration in the design and operation of critical infrastructure systems such as transportation, production and data networks. Due to their increasing scale and interconnectedness, these systems pose several new challenges. For example, small local disruptions can cascade through the network to cause massive failures, or local actions to mitigate disruptions can increase vulnerability of the other parts of the network. In spite of sustained research efforts, the available approaches either take a static perspective, and hence are inadequate to address these challenges, or they do not provide formal guarantees.
In this talk, I present provably-resilient distributed control policies for dynamic flows over networks, and illustrate the results in the context of urban transportation networks. Specifically, I present a novel class of locally cooperative routing policies. These policies, when used as local adjustments to standard global route choice models, lead to stability of classical transportation equilibria in the dynamical setting. The same policies also render maximum resilience to the network against malicious disruptions. These results rely on a combination of tools from network flows, evolutionary game theory and monotone dynamical systems, and particularly highlight the effect of cascade phenomena on resilience.

Talk Title: The Emerging Role of Patient-Calibrated Computational Modeling in Cancer Research: A Case Study in Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS)
Abstract: Current clinical oncology practice can generate a wide variety of data for patients. Radiology is used both to detect and plan surgical excisions. Immunostains performed on pre-surgical biopsies are used to diagnose (and grade) the cancers and select therapeutic agents. Molecular profiling may also help stratify patients and select therapeutic agents. However, there is currently no technique to quantitatively combine these diverse data sources, along with novel in vitro measurements, to improve surgical and therapeutic planning. In this talk, we will discuss efforts by my lab (MathCancer.org) and the Center for Applied Molecular Medicine to solve this issue. We will focus on developing and calibrating biologically-grounded computational models to individual patients (particularly ductal carcinoma in situ), encouraging (and validated!) results in quantitatively predicting clinical progression, the implications for making and quantitatively testing biological hypotheses, and the role of mathematical modeling in facilitating a deeper understanding of biology, pathology, and radiology. We anticipate that such efforts will play an increasing role in driving experimental cell biology, testing and challenging current cancer biology orthodoxy, and ultimately improving clinical care.

There will be two offerings of the SAP TERP10 Student Certification Academy in 2012. Both offerings will run for 9 full days, with the the certification examination to be given on the morning of the 10th day.
Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Prof. Vawter began teaching officially at ITP in 1996 and currently focuses on SAP.

Talk Title: Temporal, spatial and toxicological characteristics of coarse particulate matter in an urban area and relation to sources and regulations
Abstract:
To advance our understanding on the relationship between the sources, chemical composition and toxicity of coarse particles, two comprehensive investigations were conducted in the Los Angeles Basin from 2008 to 2010 to characterize the physico-chemical and toxicological properties of ambient coarse particulate matter (CPM). The first study features of a year-long sampling campaign at 10 sampling sites throughout the basin in an attempt to study the spatial and seasonal characteristics of ambient coarse particles. An intensive study, focusing on the diurnal trends, was conducted at 3 sampling sites to examine how the change in meteorological conditions throughout a day may affect the source strength and formation mechanisms of coarse mode aerosols. The results from these two studies have become an invaluable tool to advance our understanding on the cause of the temporal and spatial variation of CPM concentrations and chemical composition, and to identify the linkage between toxicity levels and source-specific chemical constituents in CPM. This investigation thereby provides valuable scientific information for environmental policy decision making, and a strong scientific basis to develop cost-effective strategies to protect the public health from coarse PM exposure.

Abstract: Course Overview
This course teaches you the advanced problem-solving skills you'll need in order to measure a process, analyze the results, develop process improvements and quantify the resulting savings. Project assignments between sessions require you to apply what youâve learned. This course is presented in the classroom in three five-day sessions over a three-month period.
Learn the advanced problem-solving skills you need to implement the principles, practices and techniques of Six Sigma to maximize performance and cost reductions in your organization. During this three-week practitioner course, you will learn how to measure a process, analyze the results, develop process improvements and quantify the resulting savings. You will be required to complete a project demonstrating mastery of appropriate analytical methods and pass an examination to earn IIEâs Six Sigma Black Belt Certificate.This practitioner course for Six Sigma implementation provides extensive coverage of the Six Sigma process as well as intensive exposure to the key analytical tools associated with Six Sigma, including project management, team skills, cost analysis, FMEA, basic statistics, inferential statistics, sampling, goodness of fit testing, regression and correlation analysis, reliability, design of experiments, statistical process control, measurement systems analysis and simulation. Computer applications are emphasized.
NOTE: Participants must bring a laptop computer running Microsoft Office to the seminar.

On-Campus Course is held in state-of-the-art facilities on the University of Southern California campus, located in downtown Los Angeles. Overview of on-campus option:

* Ability to logon and view archived course information - up to 7 days after the course has been offered. This includes course documents and streaming video of the lectures.

Abstract: To address the dual problem of volatility of insurance premiums in the aftermath of a catastrophe and homeownersâ failure to properly insure against future damage from disasters, we have recently proposed the introduction of multi-year insurance (MYI) to complement standard annual policies. This talk reports on the findings of a web-based experiment undertaken with real money to determine the demand for MYI using a representative sample of approximately 500 adult subjects in the United States. We find that the demand for MYI is very significant. When insurance is actuarially priced, a majority of individuals favor this type of contract over annual policies. The demand for MYI remains quite high even when it is priced 5 percent and 10 percent above the actuarially fair price. The talk concludes by discussing the role that MYI policies can play in reducing losses from catastrophic risk.
Biography: Howard C. Kunreuther is the James G. Dinan Professor; Professor of Decision Sciences and Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School, and co-director of the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center. He has a long-standing interest in ways that society can better manage low-probability, high-consequence events related to technological and natural hazards. Dr. Kunreuther is a member of the World Economic Forumâs Global Agenda Council on Insurance and Asset Management for 2011-2012, and in 2009-2010 served as co-chair of the Forumâs Global Agenda Council on Leadership and Innovation for Reducing Risks from Natural Disasters. He currently serves the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a chapter lead author of the IPCCâs 5th Assessment Report on Integrated Risk and Uncertainty Assessment of Climate Change Response. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis, receiving the Societyâs Distinguished Achievement Award in 2001. His most recent books are At War with the Weather (with E. Michel-Kerjan) (2009, paperback, 2011), winner of the Kulp-Wright Book Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association in 2011; Learning from Catastrophes: Strategies for Reaction and Response (with M. Useem) (2010); and Insurance and Behavioral Economics: Improving Decisions in the Most Misunderstood Industryâ(with Mark Pauly and Stacey McMorrow) (forthcoming 2012).

Talk Title: SAP TERP 10 Student Certification Academy
Abstract: The University of Southern California, being an active member of SAPâs Global University Alliances program since its inception in 1996, has been chosen to offer the TERP10 Academy to its students in early Summer 2012. The TERP10 Academy, and its certification, is a direct response to the global forecast of needed SAP skills in the market, estimated at between 30,000 and 40,000, in the next several years.
Students completing the TERP10 Academy and passing SAPâs certification exam will have the advantage of being equipped with a good understanding of business processes adopted by companies around the world. They will also get insights into best business practices and how SAP can be used to optimize business processes. Students will find that the TERP10 Certification will open internship opportunities as well as full time jobs with consulting firms such as Deloitte, Ernst and Young, KPMG, Hitachi, and other SAP partner companies.
There will be two offerings of the SAP TERP10 Student Certification Academy in 2012. Both offerings will run for 9 full days, with the the certification examination to be given on the morning of the 10th day.
Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Prof. Vawter began teaching officially at ITP in 1996 and currently focuses on SAP.
