SAP TERP 10 Student Certification Academy

Speaker: Richard Vawter, USC Viterbi School of Engineering
Talk Title: SAP TERP 10 Student Certification Academy
Abstract: The University of Southern California, being an active member of SAPâs Global University Alliances program since its inception in 1996, has been chosen to offer the TERP10 Academy to its students in early Summer 2012. The TERP10 Academy, and its certification, is a direct response to the global forecast of needed SAP skills in the market, estimated at between 30,000 and 40,000, in the next several years.
Students completing the TERP10 Academy and passing SAPâs certification exam will have the advantage of being equipped with a good understanding of business processes adopted by companies around the world. They will also get insights into best business practices and how SAP can be used to optimize business processes. Students will find that the TERP10 Certification will open internship opportunities as well as full time jobs with consulting firms such as Deloitte, Ernst and Young, KPMG, Hitachi, and other SAP partner companies.
There will be two offerings of the SAP TERP10 Student Certification Academy in 2012. Both offerings will run for 9 full days, with the the certification examination to be given on the morning of the 10th day.
Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Talk Title: MRI Coils: Theory and Practice
Abstract: Radio frequency coils provide the interface between patient and the electronics in an MRI scanner. All the information conveyed between the subject and the scanner passes through and is conditioned by the RF coils. Thus, the design of the RF coils is a critical element in the overall performance of an MRI scanner. Transmit coils produce the radio frequency field B1, which excites and manipulates the nuclear spins. Most often, the transmit coil is a large volume coil that produces a homogeneous RF field so that all spins are excited equally. The primary function of a receive coil is to pick up the magnet field generated by the precessing spins and convert it to an electronic signal. The receive coil also picks up noise emanating from the sample material such as tissue. A well designed receive coil and its preamplifier should add very little additional noise to the desired signal. A small surface coil can produce a higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) than a larger volume coil but only in localized region. The surface coil couples strongly to the signal locally but not to the noise originating from more distance tissue. The larger field-of-view of a volume coil can be recovered by using a phased array of smaller coils that retain their higher SNR. The amplitude and phase of the signal induced in a surface coil is dependent on the relative location of the voxel and the coil. A technique called parallel imaging exploits this added spatial information of an array to shorten the imaging time by substituting for some of the gradient encoding.
Biography: Prof. Cecil Hayes obtained his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard in 1973. His thesis used NMR to study internal fields in zinc chalcogenides. Post doctorates at Rutgers and University of Utah applied NMR to critical phenomena of xenon and ionic motion in sodium beta alumina. While at Utah, he built a small magnetic resonance imager to quantify lung water in rats. In 1982, he joined GE Medical Systems in Milwaukee and helped developed their 1.5T Signa scanner. He is best known as the inventor of the birdcage coil that is commonly used as the volume coil in most scanners. Since 1991, he has been at University of Washington, where he developed specialized phased arrays for diagnostic imaging and research on humans and animals.

Abstract: In this seminar, the solid state pulsed power modulators
developed in KERI, based on Power Electronics technologies are
overviewed. During last ten years, several kinds of solid state
modulators were developed in KERI such as IGBT stacks with step
up transformer, full IGBT stack based marx generator, modified
IGBT marx generator and high repetitive solid state modulator.
Basic principle of the design is described and each pros and cons are compared. KERI's solid state pulsed power modulators have a lot of advantages for industrial pulsed power application focused on everlasting life cycle and high repetitive, and shows superior arching protection ability.

Talk Title: Wave Induced Hydrodynamic Complexity and Transport in the Nearshore
Abstract: In the coastal area, defined as the region between the shoreline and some offshore limit where the depth can no longer influence the waves, complex behavior of waves is expected due to various physical effects such as turbulence, wave-structure interaction, wave-current interaction, wave breaking and fluid-density variations.
In this study, depth-integrated numerical models used in long wave simulation are developed for better understanding of complicated hydrodynamics at the nearshore.
First, a non-dispersive shallow water model and dispersive Boussinesq model are two-way coupled to develop a seamless model for long wave evolution from deep to shallow water with fine scale resolution, without the loss of locally important physics.
Second, a set of depth-integrated equations describing combined wave-current flows are derived mathematically and discretized numerically. To account for the effect of turbulent interaction between waves and underlying currents with arbitrary profile, new additional stresses are introduced, which represent radiation stress of waves over the ambient current field.
Finally, numerical model for gravity waves propagating over variable density fluids is developed by allowing horizontal and vertical variation of fluid density. Throughout the derivation, density change effects appear as correction terms while the internal wave effects on the free surface waves in a two-layer system are accounted for through direct inclusion of internal wave velocity component.
For each of the studied topics, numerical tests are performed to support its accuracy and applicability. Consequently, we developed a comprehensive tool for numerical simulation of complex nearshore hydrodynamics.

Biography: Although Prof. Richard Vawter hasn't flown for over a decade, he's had plenty of experience in the cockpitâespecially as a college student! His undergraduate degrees at both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Arizona and UCLA were accomplished by literally flying between classes.
Upon completing his Engineering degree at UCLA, Richard Vawter started work at Rockwell International analyzing the dynamic loads placed upon the Space Shuttle during the launch and entry phases of a mission. After the Challenger incident, Richard Vawter was chosen to be part of NASAâs Crew Egress Team and assigned the task to design a system and method for the crew to escape the shuttle during a controlled emergency descent.
Following the resumption of the Space Shuttle flights, Prof. Vawter began taking graduate classes at the School of Engineering. After only one graduate class, Prof. Vawter became hooked on USC, completing Masters degrees in both Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. After two years as a computer consultant, Prof. Vawter returned to USC and worked for the Marshall School of Business as a Computer Systems and Applications Specialist. During that time, he had the opportunity to fill in for a week teaching an ITP class and discovered his teaching talents when the students started clamoring for him to come back. Prof. Vawter began teaching officially at ITP in 1996 and currently focuses on SAP.

Talk Title: Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis of Highway Bridges Exposed to Violent Waves
Abstract:
The vulnerability of coastal bridges to damage during Hurricane induced storm surge has been illustrated along the U.S. Gulf Coast in several hurricane events. The total losses during Hurricane Katrina, considering all direct and indirect losses (e.g., job losses), are estimated to exceed 100 billion dollar. Bridges revealed to be the most vulnerable critical components of the transportation system, suffering damage during hurricane induced storm surges and wave loads, and costing over 1 billion dollar to repair or replace TCLEE (2006).
The objective of this study was to calculate the hydrodynamic forces on bridge superstructure via Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). Three dimensional numerical wave-load model based on two-phase Navier-Stokes equations is used to evaluate dynamic wave forces exerted on the bridge deck. In order to accurately capture the complex interaction of waves with bridge deck, several millions of mesh cells are used in the simulation domain and simulations are ran on High Performance Computing and Communication (HPCC) cluster at University of Southern California.
First, CFD software was validated by simulating interaction of a solitary wave with a flat plate. The simulation results for pressure under the plate and velocities inside water were in good agreement with experimental data available from French (1970).
Second, Validated numerical model was applied to a 1:5 scale Escambia Bay bridge which was heavily damaged during Hurricane Ivan. Compared to simple flat plate problem, Highway bridge superstructures pose a unique challenge due to their complex geometries, bluff profile, and their relatively large width-to-wavelength ratio. When the added complexities of trapped air, turbulence, and structural response are incorporated, analytical solutions become impractical and the available empirical solutions based on small-scale experiments may be biased by scale effects. Simulation results were compared to experimental data available from the O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State University. Influence of modeling (2D vs 3D), time step and grid refinement have been investigated. It has been determined that the two phase Navier Stokes equations are very sensitive to the choice of mesh size and time step. Some guidelines based on simulation results are developed for optimum choice of mesh size and time step for similar wave structure interaction problems.
Third, In order to evaluate scale effects in the wave bridge interaction problem, a bridge prototype with exact Escambia Bay Bridge dimensions is setup. Equivalent wave heights and period are calculated using Froude similitude laws from the wave heights and periods used in model simulations. The forces obtained from CFD simulations for prototype bridge are compared to forces calculated using Froude similitude law from model bridge simulations.
Forth, CFD simulation results for model and prototype bridge was compared with recently published AASHTO guidelines. Recently published AASHTO guidelines for coastal bridges vulnerable to storms provide a series of equations to estimate maximum quasi-steady and slamming forces due to wave impact. These guidelines are developed based on experiments conducted at University of Florida on 1:8 scale Escambia Bay bridge.
Fifth, since air entrapped between bridge girders and diaphragm was determined to be the main reason behind highway bridge failures during recent Hurricanes and
Tsunamis, two retrofitting options are evaluated in terms of their efficacy in reducing hydrodynamics forces applied to bridge superstructure. These two options were using airvents in bridge deck and using airvents in bridge diaphragms.
The ability of CFD to model a complex flow such as described in this dissertation would provide a powerful tool to predict the hydrodynamic forces under various conditions and furthermore to devise effective disaster prevention plan against bridge failure.

Abstract: It is more than half a century the field of asynchronous circuits has begun to attract the attention of researchers. Since then a large number of theoretical concerns have been studied in detail. However until recently the research in this field was almost limited to some academic communities. As the research was focused almost on theory rather than practice, this logic circuit design methodology was not globally in use and few numbers of industries were interested to invest on it. Nevertheless, since early 2000 by the emergence of large-scale SoCs the figure has been changed and the Asynchronous Circuits has drawn a high level of interest from both academic and industrial minds. Nowadays one can hardly deny the advantages of using asynchronous circuits for NoCs in large systems and particularly for 3D-NoCs. In this talk I would like to elaborate on the advantages of asynchronous design on the network performance, and as a summary of our research during the last five years on asynchronous NoC and GALS systems, l show how asynchronous circuit makes the construction of large-scale inter-cluster communication infrastructure possible. Furthermore we will discuss on the design of ASPIN (a distributed asynchronous NoC) and on the advantages of asynchronous 3D-NoCs using serialized vertical links and thus on the unavoidable use of asynchronous circuits in future 3D MP-SoCs.
Biography: Abbas SHEIBANYRAD (known Hamed to friends) was born in Dezfoul, a city in southwestern Iran, in 1976. He received a bachelorâs degree in Computer Hardware Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic University. After that he held a design engineer position in the R&D section of a company manufacturing telecommunication equipments, for three years in Tehran. Hamed received a masterâs degree in Microelectronic and Integrated System Architecture from the University of Pierre and Marie Curie (Paris 6) in 2004. In March, 2008, from the same university (LIP6) he obtained a PhD degree on Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Electronics. After one year of postdoctoral fellowship in TIMA laboratory in Grenoble, France, since 2009 he is a CNRS (French national center of scientific research) research fellow working in SLS team of the same laboratory. His research interests include principally network-level architecture of Networks-on-Chip.

Talk Title: Development of a Nonlinear Quadrilateral Layered Membrane Element with Drilling Degrees of Freedom and a Nonlinear Quadrilateral Thin Flat Layered Shell Element for the Modeling of Reinforced Concrete Walls
Abstract:
The primary thrusts of this dissertation are to develop and test a new quadrilateral layered membrane element with drilling degrees of freedom (DOF) and a quadrilateral thin flat layered shell element for the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete walls. The drilling degrees of freedom refers to the incorporation of the in-plane rotation as a degree of freedom at each node of the element. The membrane element consists of a quadrilateral element with a total of 12 DOF, 3 per node, 2 displacements and 1 in-plane rotation, and uses a blended field interpolation for the displacements over the element. This formulation is an extension of the one developed by Xia et al. in 2009. The shell element is created by the combination of the membrane element developed in this dissertation and a Discrete Kirchhoff Quadrilateral Element (DKQ, 12 DOF), formulated by Batoz and Tahar in 1982, to model the out of plane bending behavior of the element. The modeling of the section of the membrane and the shell element consists of a layered system of fully bonded, smeared steel reinforcement and smeared orthotropic concrete material with the rotating angle formulation. The layered section for the shell includes the coupling membrane and bending effects. These elements are implemented on a finite element framework using the object oriented programing language under MATLAB. The framework or MATLAB toolbox for Finite Elements developed for this dissertation allows to incorporate, develop and test new elements, materials, sections and analysis algorithms in a easy and quick manner. The proposed elements are evaluated using experimental results that are available in the literature. It is shown that the new elements are in excellent agreement with the experimental results for the different load configuration, monotonic and cyclic loading, and they are able to predict the failure modes for the different wall configurations analyzed in this dissertation.

Talk Title: CREATE Research Metrics and Evaluation: Preliminary Value/Quality Model with One-Way Sensitivity Analysis

Abstract: CREATE regularly solicits and receives research project proposals from numerous investigators, and needs a way of assessing the relative value/quality of each. Currently, it relies heavily on its Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) to help in choosing its research project portfolio. But the SAC's evaluations are subjective (albeit from experts), its processes are time- and resource-intensive, and there is often insufficient information available on which to make reliable value judgments. The goal of this project is to explore the viability of using more quantitative/objective bases for the selection of CREATE's research portfolio, and to devise models/tools to help complement (and potentially eventually replace) some of the current SAC functions. In this presentation, we put forth and demonstrate a preliminary Matlab-based research project value model (with one-way sensitivity analysis).
The model has six modules: 1) readability of white paper; 2) relevance of work to CREATE and to DHS; 3) publication record of PI; 4) scientific quality; 5) feasibility; and 6) appropriateness of budget. Readability is assessed using three common readability formulas from the literature, and relevance using keyword analyses - with keywords extracted from CREATE's Strategic Plan, and from the DHS S&T Directorate's Mission, Goals, & Objectives. The four other modules are not automated, in that they rely on user-supplied data. Each module contains various parameters, each with an associated utility weight, and another model component - the "switchboard" - contains the utility weights associated with each module. The user sets the initial values of all utility weights using sliders. The model output is twofold: 1) a plot of assessed value of the various projects; and 2) a 'global' measure of the sensitivity of these value ratings to changes in the value of a particular utility weight, across its entire range of possible variation.
Biography: Dr. Nathaniel (Nat) Heatwole joined the Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) in March 2011 as a post-doctoral research associate. He received his doctorate in Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. EPP is an interdisciplinary department within the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon where research focuses on the intersections of science/technology, government and public policy, and society.
His dissertation examined the cost-effectiveness of various mitigation measures to protect buildings and their occupants from vehicle bomb attacks, including: vehicle barriers and setback distance; blast walls; and numerous window-related options such as stronger glazing, smaller pane sizes, and security film. It also examined how the various U.S. government blast standards (codes) for buildings (formulated by groups in DHS, GSA, DoD, and the State Department) might be made more risk- and performance-based, in a way that would be manageable and beneficial.
Dr. Heatwole has a bachelor's degree in physics and political science (double major) from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.

Talk Title: Homogenization Procedures for the Constitutive Material Modeling and Analysis of Aperiodic Microstructures
Abstract: Composite materials are the well-known substitutes for traditional metals in various industries because of their micro-structural character. Micro-structures provide a high strength-to-weight ratio, which makes them suitable for manufacturing large variety of applications ranging from simple toys to complicated space/aircraft structures. Since, these materials are widely used in high performance structures, their stress/thermal analysis issues are of major concern. Due to the high degree of material heterogeneity, it is extremely difficult to analyze such structures.
Homogenization (rigorous averaging) is a process that overcomes the difficulty of modeling each micro-structure. It replaces an individual micro-structure by an equivalent material model representation (unit cell). Periodic micro-structures appear in regular intervals throughout the domain, in contrast aperiodic micro-structures follows an irregular pattern. Further, this method bridges the analysis gap between micro and macro domain of the structures. In this thesis, Homogenization procedure based on anti-periodic displacement fields for aperiodic micro-structures and aperiodic boundary conditions are considered to model the constitutive material matrix. This work could be easily implemented with the traditional finite element packages. In addition, it eventually increases the convergence accuracy and reduces the high computational expenses. Different problems are analyzed by the implementation of digital image processing schemes for the extraction of a unit cell around the Gauss quadrature points and the mesh-generation. In the future, this research defines a new path for the analysis of any random heterogeneous materials by its ease of implementation and the state-of-the-art micro-structure material modeling capabilities and digital image based micro-meshing.

Talk Title: All Fitness is Local: The Special Relativity of Cancer
Abstract: One of the purposes of the Physical Sciences Oncology Center effort is to try and introduce physics ideas into cancer in the hopes that physicists can transform the way we think about cancer. Special relativity in physics plays a seminal role in how we view the world: namely no frame of reference is special, and information can only be transmitted at a maximum speed in any frame. I will attempt to use some of these concepts to view the process of metastasis as an information wave moving through space, and discuss our experiments that view metastasis from the frame of reference of the invading cells
About the USC Physical Sciences in Oncology Center Monthly Seminar Series
USC was selected to establish a $16 million cancer research center as part of a new strategy against the disease by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and its National Cancer Institute. The new center is one of 12 in the nation to receive the designation. During the five-year initiative, the Physical Sciences-Oncology Centers will take new, nontraditional approaches to cancer research by studying the physical laws and principles of cancer; evolution and the evolutionary theory of cancer; information coding, decoding, transfer and translation in cancer; and ways to de-convolute cancerâs complexity. As part of the outreach component of this grant, the Center for Applied Molecular Medicine is hosting a monthly seminar series.
