Environmental Technology Challenges & EntrepreneurshipAnthony MichaelsManaging Director
    Proteus Environmental Technologies
Los Angeles, CA 90071The entrepreneurial spirit that creates new and profitable companies is one of the most effective methods for spreading new technologies and innovations throughout the human population and across the Earth's landscape. This can be for both better and worse. Damaging technologies with good local economics can quickly spread a form of pollution or an impact on human or environmental health. At the same time, a novel solution to a compelling environmental challenge can gain widespread use through the self-reinforcing power of markets. Environmental scholarship within universities is one of the most creative sources of innovation, however many challenges exist for using markets to spread those innovative solutions to our homes, towns and lives. These challenges reside in the university culture, the sources of funding - the valley of death - and within the traditions and practices of the business community. However, I have a great optimism about the potential for markets to take some of the best academic scholarship, apply it to some of the largest human environmental challenges and make a major improvement in the quality of life and the sustainability of our society. I will present a few examples based on my own USC experience - one made more real by my personal choice to leave academia and form Proteus Environmental Technologies, a company designed specifically to help universities commercialize their academic environmental discoveries. Biofuels are a renewable energy source that illustrates both the strengths and weaknesses of new environmental technologies. Algae-based fuels have the greatest promise, but have significant challenges, both biological and technical. The systems at full scale require well-mixed bio-reactors with cost effective methods for re-introducing carbon and nutrients. Extracting algae and processing becomes a dynamic problem as the extraction process shifts the algal ecosystem towards cells that escape extraction. It is also the largest capital cost in an algae farm. Scaling itself is an interesting challenge as individual farms must be at the scale of 1000s of hectacres and a meaningful solution may require 10-20 million hectacres. In the end, nobody wants algae for its own sake, it must be a product that fits into the current or future energy or food markets. The technologies to transform 1,000s of tons per day of green powder to a coal substitute, a liquid fuel or an animal feed must parallel the development of an algae farm and have a strong feedback on the design choices for the farm and its crop. Microbial fuel cells are a biological curiosity with the potential to transform energy production world wide. Again, scaling is key. How do we take a device at the scale of liters and make a facility that can process a million cubic meters per day? The technical challenges range from the biology of biofilms, the materials for anodes and cathodes to the fluid mechanics of dilute solutions that must interact with those biofilms, all at a reasonable cost.

DANIEL J. EPSTEIN DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING SEMINAR"Simulation-based Algorithms for Multi-stage Decision Systems: An Empirical Process Theory Approach"Dr. Rahul JainAssistant Professor, USC Electrical Engineering-SystemsABSTRACT: I will start by discussing the state of art in Statistical Learning. We will then focus on a particular area called reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning models are relevant for many multi-stage decision systems and multi-agent systems including autonomous robotic systems, communication networks, medical decision support systems, distributed databases and information retrieval systems, etc. Such systems are typically modeled as a Markov decision process (MDP).We will first look at some classical results related to MDPs. We will then see the computational challenges in such methods. I will then introduce a simulation-based framework for their design and analysis that yields computationally tractable algorithms. The framework depends on new extensions to the empirical process theory to MDPs that I developed. The theory depends on ideas introduced by Kolmogorov and Tihomirov.THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2008, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM, ANDRUS GERONTOLOGY BLDG ROOM 309

  • The Upcoming Revolution in Construction

    Thu, Oct 02, 2008 @ 12:00 PM - 01:20 PM

    University Calendar

ISE 650 SEMINAR IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING: "The Upcoming Revolution in Construction" Guest Speaker: Dr. Behrokh KhoshnevisProfessor, USC Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems EngineeringABSTRACT: The nature of construction has remained intensely manual throughout recorded history. Unlike in manufacturing, the growth of automation in construction has been slow. A promising new automation approach is Contour Crafting (CC). Invented by Behrokh Khoshnevis, Contour Crafting is a mega-scale fabrication process aiming at automated construction of whole structures as well as subcomponents. The potential of CC became evident from investigations and experiments with materials and geometries. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses may be constructed automatically in a single run with all plumbing and electrical utilities imbedded in each house; yet each could be a different design. The implication is especially profound for emergency shelter construction and low income housing. NASA is exploring possible application of CC in building on other planets. This new mode of construction will be one of the very few feasible approaches for building on planets such as Moon and Mars, which are being targeted for human colonization before the end of the century. CC has received international attention and could soon revolutionize the construction industry. For more information please visit www.ContourCrafting.orgTHURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2008, 12:00-1:00 PM, GER 309 BIO: Behrokh Khoshnevis is a professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering and is the Director of the Center for Rapid Automated Fabrication Technologies (CRAFT) and the Director of Manufacturing Engineering Program. He is active in CAD/CAM, robotics, and mechatronics related research and development projects that include the development of three novel Solid Free Form (Rapid Prototyping) processes called Contour Crafting, SIS and MPM, a technology for automated construction of housing structures, development of mechatronics systems for biomedical applications (e.g., restorative dentistry, rehabilitation engineering, and tactile sensing devices), autonomous mobile and modular robots for fabrication and assembly applications on earth and in space, and automated equipment for oil (petroleum) and gas industries. He has several major inventions which have been either commercialized or are in the commercialization process. He has also been closely involved in several product development processes. His educational activities at USC include the teaching of a graduate course on Invention and Technology Development. He routinely conducts lectures and seminars on the subject of invention. He is a Fellow member of the Society for Computer Simulation, a Fellow member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and and a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Dr. Khoshnevis' inventions have received extensive worldwide publicity in acclaimed media such as New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Business Week, Der Spiegel, New Scientist, and national and international television and radio networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Discovery channels of US, Canada, Germany and BBC World News. Contour Crafting was recently selected as one of top 25 out of more than 4000 candidate inventions by the History Channel Modern Marvels program and the National Inventor's Hall of Fame.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS - MATH FINANCE COLLOQUIUMTitle: "Optimal Acquisition of a Partially Hedgeable House"Speaker: Professor Fernando Zapatero, Dept of Finance and Business Economics, USC Marshall School of BusinessABSTRACT: We consider the problem of the optimal time to purchase a house by a
risk-averse investor who has access to complete financial markets and
whose objective is to maximize expected utility from wealth at some fixed
horizon. The house purchase is financially attractive (due to tax advantages, for
    example), which provides an incentive to buy as soon as possible;
however, its value is only partially correlated with financial markets and,
therefore, house price risk cannot be perfectly hedged, which provides
an incentive to delay purchase. We are able to fully characterize the
problem in the case of CARA utility, so that we can generate simple numerical
solutions for different parameter values, and study the trade-off between
    the two conflicting incentives.Where: KAP 249When: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2008, 3:30--4:30 PM

ISE 650 SEMINAR IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING: "Models and Algorithms for Stackelberg Games with Incomplete Information"Guest Speaker: Dr. Fernando OrdonezAssociate Professor, USC Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems EngineeringABSTRACT: Stackelberg games, where one player, the leader, selects its action first and the second player decides its optimal strategy knowing the actions of the leader is a natural problem for various security domains. This framework however assumes the leader has an accurate model of the adversary. In this work we have developed efficient mixed-integer programs and algorithms to solve situations where there is imperfect information about the adversary, its reward structure, or decision process.THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2008, 12:00-1:00 PM, GER 309BIO: Dr. Ordonez is an Associate Professor in the Industral and Systems Engineering department with a joint appointment in the Computer Science department at USC's Viterbi School of Engineering. Joint Mathematical Finance Colloquium / Probability Seminar / Financial Engineering SeminarWhere: KAP 249When: FRIDAY, October 17, 2008, 3:30-4:30 PMTitle: "Information Percolation in Large Markets"Speaker: Prof. Darrell Duffie, Dean Witter Distinguished Professor of Finance, The Graduate School of Business, Stanford UniversityABSTRACT: We solve for the equilibrium dynamics of information sharing in an over-the-counter market with a large population. Each agent is endowed with signals regarding the likely outcome of a random variable of common concern. Individuals choose the effort with which they search for others from whom they can gather additional information. When two agents meet, they share their information. The information gathered is further shared at subsequent meetings, and so on. Equilibria exist in which agents search maximally until they acquire sufficient information precision, and then minimally. Endowing agents with public signals reduces information sharing and can in some cases decrease welfare.Professor Duffle is being hosted by the Economics Department, and is available to meet in DRB 212 between 10 and 11:30 AM.Information Contact: Amy Yung, Economics, amy@usc.edu; Prof. Jin Ma, Economics, jinma@usc.edu

    University Calendar

ISE 650 SEMINAR IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING: "Complex Shape Design for Direct Digital Manufacturing"Guest Speaker: Dr. Yong ChenAssistant Professor, USC Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems EngineeringABSTRACT: Layer-based Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) is a direct manufacturing process that can fabricate complicated geometries cost-effectively. Recent advances in material, process and machine development have enabled the SFF processes to evolve from prototype usage to direct product manufacturing. Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM) based on the SFF processes provides tremendous design freedom including the possibility of developing revolutionary new designs by utilizing complex geometry. However, a much higher degree of geometric complexity in design also poses significant challenges in modeling, analyzing, synthesizing, and optimizing shapes to meet the specified requirements. The talk provides an introduction of DDM and the related design opportunities and challenges. Some researches on DDM and design for DDM will also be highlighted including using complex shapes to achieve heterogeneous material properties and multi-functionality in a product component. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2008, 12:00-1:00 PM, GER 309BIO: Dr. Chen is an Assistant Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at USC. His research interests are in the areas of computer-aided design and manufacturing; especially computer-aided design tools for additive manufacturing; process development for Rapid Prototyping and Tooling; and geometric reasoning in product design, analysis and manufacturing.
