Dr. King shows how attention to process is necessary to forsee unintended consequences and mitigate their impact on an HIS implementation. These consequences reflect the coming together of a social and technical system. Case studies representing different levels of analysis are used for illustration: e-prescribing, indoor positioning systems, clinical workflow, and hand-held nursing tools. The field of industrial and systems engineering has much to contribute to the design of information systems through a systems perspective and the study of human and organizational factors. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2007, KAPRIELIAN HALL (KAP) 167, 3:30-4:30 PMBIOGRAPHY: Nelson King is an assistant professor in information systems at the Olayan School of Business - American University of Beirut (AUB). His research focuses on the social and technical implications of process change in the introduction of healthcare information systems. He studied at the University of Southern California where he obtained his PhD from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and conducted his post-doctoral research in medical imaging informatics with the Department of Radiology. Dr. King worked for over 20 years as a systems engineer in natural resources, aerospace, and information technology before starting his academic career. His healthcare research has been published in E-service Journal, Academic Radiology and the Journal of Digital Imaging. He has also published information systems articles in MIS Quarterly, Information Resources Management Journal, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

FreundTheresa Seley Professor in Management Sciences, MIT Sloan School of ManagementABSTRACT: In contrast to conventional continuous optimization algorithms whose iterates are computed and analyzed deterministically, randomized methods rely on stochastic processes and random number/vector generation as part of the algorithm and/or its analysis. Whereas randomization in algorithms has been a part of research in discrete optimization for at least the last 20 years, randomization has played at most a minor role in algorithms for continuous convex optimization, at least until recently. This talk will focus on two recent randomization-based algorithms for convex optimization: a method by Bertsimas and Vempala based on cuts at the center of mass, and a new method by Belloni and Freund that "pre-conditions" a standard interior-point algorithm using random walks. For the latter, we report very promising computational results on medium-sized conic problems. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2007, GERONTOLOGY BUILDING (GER)ROOM 309, 2:00–3:00 PMBIO: Professor Freund primarily does research on the theory and applications of continuous optimization models. Professor Freund's theoretical work includes interior-point methods for linear optimization and nonlinear optimization, complexity theory of algorithms for convex optimization and condition measures for conic and non-conic convex optimization in particular. Freund has also worked on large-scale applications of optimization in pattern classification, data mining, and adaptive conjoint analysis, among others. He has made contributions to convex analysis, combinatorics, and fixed-point theory as well. He is former Co-Editor of Mathematical Programming A and currently an Associate Editor of Mathematical Programming A, and currently Co-Director of MIT's new Program in Computation for Design and Optimization (CDO)(2004-present).

However, exponential advances in networking, computing and storage have the potential to make transformational changes in the practice of medicine far beyond the cost containment issues that so often dominate the current discussion. He is the Director of the Center for Grid Technologies at the Information Sciences Institute and a Research Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern California. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, and Bachelors degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Kesselman also serves as Chief Scientist of Univa Corporation, a company he founded with Globus co-founders Ian Foster and Steve Tuecke.Dr. Kesselman's current research interests are all aspects of Grid computing, including basic infrastructure, security, resource management, high-level services and Grid applications. He is the author of many significant papers in the field. Together with Dr. Ian Foster, he initiated the Globus Project™, one of the leading Grid research projects. The Globus project has developed the Globus Toolkit®, the de facto standard for Grid computing. Dr. Kesselman received the 1997 Global Information Infrastructure Next Generation Internet award, the 2002 R&D 100 award, the 2002 R&D Editors choice award, the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer and the 2002 Ada Lovelace Medal from the British Computing Society for significant contributions to information technology. Along with his colleagues Ian Foster and Steve Tuecke, he was named one of the top 10 innovators of 2002 by InfoWorld Magazine. In 2003, he and Dr. Foster were named by MIT Technology Review as the creators of one of the "10 technologies that will change the world." There is numerous evidence showing that if possible errors are not taken into account during the design process, we might lose the actual phenomenon. With this in mind, the field of robust optimization started within the mathematical programming community. Most results, however, were confined to problems with convex objectives. But modern engineering problems have objectives and constraints that are not explicitly given, e.g. numerical simulations describing the problem. In this talk, I will describe the recent advancements in this field which allowed to bridge the gap and provided methods for generic robust design. I will discuss examples in ultrafast optics using chirped mirrors and in cancer treatments with intensity modulated radiation therapy. Surprisingly, the robust solutions in question come at a fairly low price indicating that the advantages are worth the negligible sub-optimality. Because of their generality, the presented methods can be applied to a wide range of engineering design problems. EPSTEIN DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING SEMINAR"Efficient Simulation Procedures in Network Reliability"Samim Ghamami, Ph.D. CandidateAdvisor: Professor Sheldon RossWhen making a mathematical model for a system of many components, analytically computing the probability that the system will function, network reliability, is often impractical unless one is willing to make certain simplifying assumptions.By developing efficient simulation procedures for estimating the network reliability, our study addresses various situations where analytical computation of the network reliability loses its practicality and tractability.While the majority of network reliability models assume independent components, we have considered a certain type of dependency among system components. Also by considering multi-state, rather than binary components, we have expanded the potential application of network reliability models.To obtain statistical efficiency, new variance reduction techniques such as Innovative Stratified Sampling have been developed, and Markov Chain Monte Carlo method has been used when direct Monte Carlo simulation can not be employed.WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2007, 3:30 PM, KAPRIELIAN HALL (KAP) 158
